Together for Wildlife
Since 1895, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has worked with the mission of conserving the planet’s wildlife and natural landscapes. We do this through applied science, concrete conservation actions, policy advocacy, education, and by inspiring people to value nature. Today, we operate in more than 60 countries, and every year, millions of people are inspired by our work and develop a deeper appreciation for nature by visiting our five zoos and aquariums in New York City.
WCS in Perú
In Peru, our story began in 1968, when we supported the pioneering wildlife conservation studies of biologist William Franklin on the vicuña in what is now the Pampa Galeras – Bárbara D’Achille National Reserve. Since then, we have supported the work of renowned Peruvian and international scientists who laid the groundwork for our efforts in the country. Among them were Ian Grimwood, who authored a key report on Peruvian mammals; Bernard Peyton, who conducted early studies on the Andean bear in Machu Picchu; Antonio Brack Egg, who researched endangered wildlife in northern Peru; Patricia Majluf, who worked in Punta San Juan de Marcona; Richard Bodmer, in Tamshiyacu Tahuayo; and Eduardo Nycander, in Tambopata
At the turn of the century, we redefined our approach to address the conservation challenges of a megadiverse country like Peru, where environmental issues are complex and multifaceted. We work across multiple scales and in collaboration with communities, authorities, civil society, and the private sector. Locally, we focus our efforts on two key landscapes in the Amazon: Marañón–Ucayali, in Loreto, and Madidi–Tambopata, spanning Puno and Madre de Dios. At the same time, we lead three national initiatives focused on wildlife conservation, the effective management of protected natural areas, and the safeguarding of Amazonian aquatic ecosystems. Our strategic planning defines the long-term direction of our conservation efforts, both in the landscapes and through national-level initiatives.
